Fall Break 2015
October 2015 came with the kids trying their best to trick someone into spilling the beans as to where we were going. With the help of my amazing sister and friend, we were packed and ready to leave on Friday, October 9. The plan was to leave at 7:00am to drive the first leg of the trip, but due to the brilliant idea that I had to take 13 credits this semester at school, I was so overwhelmed and had to take a test that morning before we left. 10:00am we hit the road!
Richard had to work, so the kids and I headed out and Richard would fly out Sunday morning.
We started driving - the kids kept asking where we were going. I had them pretty convinced that we were going to Nebraska to stay one night with my brother, Alfred then we were going to to continue on to either Pennsylvania so see family there or to North Carolina for family there. They had no idea that we were headed in the complete opposite direction and were heading south. We hit the Texas border and they were still clueless. It didn't take long for Alexia to figure out where we were and where we were heading. The rest of the kids had no idea until we showed up to Derlin's and Andrea's. They were so excited - it really made the secrecry worth it.
We stayed one night and then loaded up for the remainder of the trip. The kids were pretty sure that we were not headed to Pennsylvania or North Carolina at this point. We drove 9 hours to our final destination. It was dark so they couldn't really see their surroundings, but they figured out that we were in Texas and were staying in a condo there. It was a fun condo - three levels with 3 bedrooms and 4 bathrooms! I have never seen kids so excited to have more than one bathroom! Alexia at this point, realized the name of the town that we were staying at (Montgomery, TX), grabbed my phone and flipped when she realized how close we were to the beach!
Sunday morning, we headed to Houston to pick up Richard, who was waiting at the airport. We found a ward and went to Sacrament Meeting. Heading home, the kids were so excited to be able to see their environment - palm trees, the sun, and I did not enjoy the humidity!
Monday, we told the kids that we were going to go swimming and that they need to change. They thought that we were going to a pool. 4 hours later (there was an accident on the only way onto the island which closed the highway, we were stuck so we sat and waited) we arrived at the beach. It was amazing to see the kids play. The ocean is amazing and yet overwhelming at the same time when you have never seen anything so grand before.
We played until sun down and headed home. Kaylee started to not feel good by the time we got home. Brayden's face began to swell again. Tuesday we stayed home as Kaylee was sick. By dinner time, her temp was 105 degrees. We headed to the ER and she had Strep. No fun to be sick on vacation. Wednesday, B's face was the size of a tennis ball. I packed him to the ER as well. We were there all day and came back with an infection of his salavary gland. More meds.
Thursday, with kids on antibiotics and feeling better, we went to the beach again!
Friday we took a vote: Stay home and pack and clean to prepare for the return trip or Go to the beach. You can guess what won.
Saturday, we woke early and cleaned and packed and at 10:00am headed home. We rrived home at 3:00am Sunday morning. Needless to say, I was useless in driving home. With the week behind me, I kept struggling to stay awake so Richard basically drove the whole way home.
It was a great week. Definitely the hardest with kids being sick and trying to figure out the whole insurance thing out of state.
Looking forward to our next vacation (and no, it hasn't been planned yet)
